First of two parts.

City Councilman Jim Clarke’s Centennial Committee meets on Tuesday evening at 7 in the ground-floor Dan Patacchia Room at City Hall – and you might be surprised how fast and far they have progressed still 14 months out.

Opening Day of Centennial Year tentatively is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17, although it could be moved back a week.

“We have pretty much finalized what the Opening Ceremonies are going to look like,” said Mr. Clarke, inspiration for and organizer of the 11-person committee.

“Tentatively, they will be outside where the (founder) Harry Culver statue is, in front of The Culver Hotel.”

Standing before the hotel and peering north on America’s only one-block Main Street, Mr. Clarke said that “this was the original 1.5 square miles of Culver City. It was focused around Main Street and the hotel, where the hotel later was built (in 1924).”

Downtown formed the heart of Nebraskan Harry Culver’s eponymous community when it was incorporated in 1917.

To learn more details about the Centennial, the Centennial website has been completed..

At the moment, it is content-free. The next chore for Mr. Clarke and the committee will be to fill it by mid-August.
