Re: “Centennial Countdown – 269 Days”
For the first time, this can be said publicly:
Culver City’s Centennial starts this year, Saturday, Sept. 24, the launch of a continuous 12-month party.
City Councilman Jim Clarke will be driving the party bus even though it is expected he will have been elected mayor by then.
The sprawling opening of Culver City’s grandest birthday party probably will cause Downtown to be shut off to vehicular traffic until late afternoon.
Nightfall, Mr. Clarke promises, will not curb the open-air jubilating.
“One week later,” he says, “we will have our gala. Originally we had thought of doing a dinner on Opening Day. But people will be too tired from all that is going on.
“On Saturday, Oct. 1, we will have a more formal dress-up dinner at DoubleTree by Hilton.”
As for headliners that evening, Mr. Clarke said, “Our city historian for one.”
Julie Lugo Cerra will deliver one of the most important presentations of her career, emphasizing the unique history of Culver City, accompanied by a videography of Culver City.
Further headliners are yet to be determined.
The Jazz Band from the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts at Culver City High School will entertain.
