Re “Body Cams Not Necessarily a Panacea”

With individual body cameras inevitably (?) coming to the Police Dept. perhaps during the next 12 months, Capt. Allen Azran was asked if he is concerned about potential distortion of crime scenes.

“I am not quite sure what is meant by ‘distortion,’” he said.

Could the contortions of suspects and gaps in action present an inaccurate scenario?

Put that way, the quarter-century law enforcement veteran said that illustration was too general.

“What I do know,” said Mr. Azran, “is that all of this technology has limitations.

“The body cam may not necessarily capture what went on before the officer contacted or had interaction with a particular person.

“The body cam may not paint a clear picture.

“My personal opinion,” Mr. Azran said, “is that I think society believes body cams are somewhat of a magic remedy to a whole host of problems.

“I don’t necessarily see it as being that crystal clear. Body cams will be a useful tool in many instances.

“I do see it has limitations, and there are legal issues that have to be ironed out,” Mr. Azran said.
