It will not surprise anyone in Culver City or law enforcement that Police Chief Scott Bixby will be casting his Nov. 8 vote against Prop. 64, which would legalize marijuana.
Never mind that, judging by the polling, a minority of Californians agrees with Mr. Bixby, and it is one of the best ballot bets to pass.
“We certainly don’t need another intoxicant out there,” the chief says, adding that he is a realist.
“I am all for it,” he says “if there is truly a medical purpose for THC,” Tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in marijuana.
Mr. Bixby suspects that the phrase “medical use” may have been stretched. Follow the seekers down shadowy streets.
“You have to question the legitimacy of medical use,” he says, “when you buy it at a less than desirable location rather than at CVS.”
The chief only knows one member of the law enforcement community who is supporting Prop. 64. Steve Downing, a retired LAPD deputy chief, is an outspoken proponent for legalization.
Mr. Bixby is neither horrified nor surprised that pot advocates are back for another try.
“I believe it will pass,” said the chief.
