Re: “How Much Do Culver City Students Know?”
With the arrival of the Common Core method of teaching and testing in most American public school rooms this past school year, Dr. Katie Krumpe, the School District administrator in charge of Culver City’s Common Core program, was talking about testing.
Common Core testing applies to grades three through eight plus grade 11.
Long before Common Core, Dr. Krumpe said, “there always were federal guidelines for accountability. And that is what those were, third through eighth, and grade 11.
“Not this year, but before,” she said, “the state of California said ‘Not good enough,’ and they added grade two. We used to start testing in grade two. We also tested in grades nine and 10.”
Testing was covered everywhere except K-1 and 12.
“Those were for state accountability, not federal,” Dr. Krumpe said while acknowledging “it’s confusing. Even though we have done it for 10 years, I am not sure everybody can even explain it. You just give whatever test they tell you to take.
“With a two-year break from testing the last two years (prior to the year just ended) from the state of California,” said the assistant superintendent, “until they decide what our accountability measures will be, this (just-ended) year we are back to giving the federal piece for the first time.”
