Re: “Organizing to Slow or Block ‘Mansions’”

Iain Gulin of mid-town Carlson Park was explaining why he helped organize Sunday evening’s anti-mansionization grassroots meeting at the Vets Auditorium.

“I took note that many of my neighbors have become very concerned about the imposing homes being constructed,” Mr. Gulin said.

“Many of these homes are negatively impacting their surroundings.

“People feel the City Council is not addressing a problem that many other areas of Los Angeles already have.  We know that these homes are continuing to be built here.”

Mr. Gulin characterized the turnout of “more than 50” as “a diverse mix of residents, from senior citizens who have lived here for decades to young residents who came here for the character and community of Culver.”

He said “the next steps are to let the City Council know that residents in some areas are concerned about what is happening in their neighborhoods.

“I am hopeful,” said Mr. Gulin, “that once the Council members and Planning Commission realize that the majority of residents in some neighborhoods are deeply, deeply upset by this, they will promptly act.”

Vice Mayor Andy Weissman said yesterday he does not expect a recommendation from the Planning Commission before September.

Meghan Sahli-Wells, the only City Council member at the community meeting, was inspired by what she witnessed for two hours.

“What makes Culver City so great,” she said, “is that when people have a concern, they do something about it. They reach out. They organize. They think about it. They try to find solutions. That is what happened on Sunday night.”
