There is no indication, yet, that a School Board verdict on new science labs and classrooms for Culver City High School and the Middle School will be rendered ahead of the second anniversary in June of passage of the $106 million school improvements bond.
These are the highest profile projects in the early going of a 12-year undertaking.
A year and a half along, School District officials are moving with deliberation on the highest profile projects.
They don’t know, and neither does anyone else, when the faces of the two campuses, plus the Robert Frost Auditorium, will begin to change.
Significantly, it remains unsettled for the foreseeable future whether there even will be new classrooms and labs. Present facilities may merely be upgraded.
What lies ahead may be more subtle than spectacular, Asst. Supt. Mike Reynolds notes.
“The vast majority of bond projects,” he said, “involves refurbishing existing facilities.
“By now, we have refurbished the baseball field, the softball field and what now is referred to as the artificial turf where soccer and lacrosse are played.
“That,” said Mr. Reynolds, “was our first major investment of bond funds, along with adding ramps and platforms to the bleachers in (Jerry Chabola Stadium).
“I believe the second major investment of bond funds will be the Frost Auditorium modernization. We still are waiting for the DSA (Division of the State Architect) D to finish their review and stamp the plans as completed.”
When the Frost is shut down, high school students in the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts will shift their stage over to the Vets Auditorium.
