Dateline Oakland — The Level Playing Field Institute officially has opened its  application period for the Summer Math and Science Honors Academy, the SMASH Academy at UCLA. Applications here  http://smash.lpfi.org.

The SMASH Academy is a free-of-cost, STEM-intensive college preparatory program targeting ninth grade hi students from traditionally underrepresented communities interested in pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.

This three-year, five-week summer residential program develops students’ skill sets through rigorous coursework and access to a top-level support network of mentors, STEM professionals and peers working to close the achievement gap in STEM.

During the summer, SMASH scholars attend classes and live together on the university campus. They participate in residential activities designed to foster an inclusive community.

“We look for applicants who are interested in pursuing STEM degrees and careers, but lack the resources and support needed to thrive in the field,” said Mitch Kapor, partner at Kapor Capital and interim Executive Director of the Level Playing Field Institute. “SMASH provides those missing pieces through a rigorous, research-based curriculum.”

“The beauty of SMASH is that it goes beyond academics,” said Danielle Rose, Director of Programs at Level Playing Field. “Our curriculum is developed with the whole scholar in mind. We know what is essential to their success. We focus on the cultivation of critical thinking, civic awareness, and leadership.”

For early consideration, SMASH Academy applications must be submitted by Feb. 1. Deadline is March 1. Eligibility requirements are here http://www.lpfi.org/smash.
