A New Garbage Transfer Station?

Down the street from the proposed Cumulus project, it appears that the city of Los Angeles is moving forward with plans to proceed on what it thinks will be a land swap and partnership with Culver City for a new garbage transfer station.

Formally known as a Materials Recovery Facility, it is at 6001 W. Jefferson Blvd.

Last month the Los Angeles public works commission approved a $329,000 contract with HDR Consultants to plan the assumed conversion with an 18-month goal for the new facility to go on line.

Here is the Los Angeles City Council’s motion, from president Herb Wesson (view PDF here), for putting this process in motion.

Furthermore, the Los Angeles public works staff testified that, although they have not been in touch with Culver City, they are confident the city of Los Angeles can purchase the desired lot, design the facility and reach an operation partnership with Culver City—all within 18 months.

The staff member added that “under the existing partnership with Culver City, there has always been the expectation that something like this would be happening sooner or later.”

That is not a certainty, at least yet, and there is a suspicion Culver City may be consumed by the other project on Jefferson Boulevard, at the old KLOS/KABC site.

Either way, it doesn’t sound like anyone at City Hall is aware of L.A.’s intent or has been in touch.

It seems logical a zoning change would have to occur for the new material recovery center to process other cities’ trash.
