Re: “‘Wait Staff Would Waive $15’ – Shulman”

With hard-left Democrat Hilda Solis, of all people, leading the charge, the County Board of Supervisors yesterday agreed to delay a decision on imposing a $15 minimum wage in County territory out of concern for the hit small enterprises say they will take. “I care very deeply about what happens to those mom-and-pop businesses and nonprofits,” said Ms. Solis, a staunch labor union ally as U.S. Secretary of Labor and now on the Board of Supervisors.

No such worries have plagued the Los Angeles City Council, which initiated the $15 ordinance. It was smilingly signed into law by Mayor Garcetti, and employers believe it will affect every community in Los Angeles County, regardless of any ruling by the Board of Supervisors.

Los Angeles Councilman Curren Price, who formerly represented Culver City in the state Legislature, announced the other day that he pays household help $20 hourly,

He implied that businesses should be able to handily handle $15 an hour, as of July 1 next year, as seamlessly as he can as a member of America’s highest paid City Council.

Culver City restaurateur Alan Shulman was not impressed. “This is the logic of these people have been using,” he said, temperature rising. “This is the logic that is failing the system.”

The owner of Akasha and Sambar restaurants is convinced that “the consequences are going to be tragic.

“Our belief is, here is what happens. At some point, restaurants, which employ a tremendous amount of people in this city, if they are to survive, they are going to have to dramatically cut back their labor staff,” Mr. Shulman said.

“They will have no choice. This is going to leave Culver City as a city of fast-foods.”
