No need to perspire over the City Council’s evident intention to formally crown Culver City a sanctuary city at its Tuesday, March 27, meeting.
Even though some regard the sanctuary city concept as legally/morally marginal, City Hall is in no danger of crossing the line, says City Atty. Carol Schwab.
Ms. Schwab’s office is in charge of collecting model samples of sanctuary cities for the Council to choose from.
Some people say Culver City already is behaving like a sanctuary city. Inside City Hall, officials say there is no need to worry about crossing the line of law.
“Culver City is not doing anything that could cause legal concerns,” said Ms. Schwab. “We cooperate with the federal government when needed, according to what the police chief is saying.”
On Nov. 25, Chief Bixby released a letter (http://www.thefrontpageonline.com/news/bixby-on-immigration) spelling out the Police Dept. stance on the hottest subject in America, the community police approach to illegal immigrants.
“The Culver City Police Dept. is committed to protecting everyone’s rights, regardless of immigration status,” was the chief’s key passage.
Ms. Schwab said attention should be focused on Chief Bixby rather than the city attorney’s office. “I would go with his statement,” she said. “He really knows what we are doing.
“The City Council is just looking for different options to consider. That is the direction we were given so they can decide whether they want to declare this a sanctuary city.”
There has been an explosion of sanctuary cities across America since President Trump’s election four months ago.
“Cities have taken different approaches,” Ms. Schwab said. “Some have been very strict. Others have favored a general protective nature.”
She said her office will consult with City Manager John Nachbar “about how we are going to present it.”
By the end of the evening of March 27, Culver City is expected to become America’s newest formal safe haven for illegal immigrants.
