“I don’t think people understand how much of a role Gary Silbiger wants to play in our School Board race,” calmly says candidate Scott McVarish, co-holder of the leading number of endorsements for the Nov. 3 election.

In his role as arguably the most comprehensively prepared and detail-oriented contender, Mr. McVarish’s evenness never wavered as he lambasted the perceived contentious role of the two-term former City Councilman.

“The question was, why I would want to run with someone,” said Mr. McVarish. “The answer is, if you are not on Gary Silbiger’s good side, you will be attacked. Period. Things will be taken out of context and twisted from your past or your present.

“It is not a fun experience to go through,” said the candidate who was roasted here (“Severe Criticism Aimed at McVarish”). “If you are committed to trying to make the School District or the city better, then it is something you are going to have to go through unless you kiss Gary Silbiger’s ring.

“And I don’t do that.”

Why this state of war?

“Gary Silbiger said I caused his son (Karlo) to lose his race for re-election two years ago,” Mr. McVarish said. “Just personal vengeance.”

How did you cause Mr. Silbiger to lose?

“I don’t know. I guess it’s because” Mr. McVarish was a co-founder of United Parents of Culver City three years ago. UPCC is regarded as a rival for certain liberal factions in Culver City.
