Scott Wyant, the recent City Council candidate and second-term Planning Commissioner, believed to have a brain tumor, will undergo a functional MRI on Monday.

He is being transferred from UCLA Santa Monica to UCLA Ronald Reagan Hospital, where the operation will be performed.

Mr. Wyant characterized the surgery as a procedure where he will be hooked up  and told to perform certain actions.

The purpose, said a source, is “for doctors to map the brain, to know what controls what so they can assess how excisable the brain tumor is.”

A biopsy was expected to be conducted today.

Friends say the always affable Mr. Wyant is maintaining a positive attitude in the face of several recent difficulties:

  • His left leg has given out “a couple times” lately.
  • He has been experiencing metallic taste in his mouth.
  • When he bends over, he becomes dizzy.

Mr. Wyant fell last weekend.

The news sent waves of shock across the community where Mr. Wyant, an entrepreneur, is known for his technology skills.

A tall, strapping, blond-haired (almost daily) surfer, even in his mid-60s, Mr. Wyant cut one of the most striking figures during the recent campaign for City Council.

The former vice chair of the Chamber of Commerce board of directors, remarked a number of times about how much he relished campaigning.

He finished fifth in a field of seven, which only spurred Mr. Wyant to vow that he will try again.

Earlier this week, he became the first candidate to declare for the 2018 City Council race.

  1. After a grueling local campaign season that seemed to last for an eternity, I wake up to hear this news about my competitor and friend Scott. This brings to home what is really important! Though we were competing against each other to get a seat on the council I have the utmost respect and admiration for Scott which started when we were together on the Planning Commission and continues to this day. This, IMO is the time for us as a community, regardless of what camp, if any, you hold your allegiance to collectively in each of our own special ways to keep Scott and his family on our minds, thoughts/prayers for Scott to get through his procedure A-OK and a speedy recovery.

  2. That’s horrifying. I can’t imagine how frightening that must be for him and for his family. I definitely hope Mr. Wyant has a quick and full recovery.

  3. Even though Scott was not elected, I’m pretty sure all of Culver City must have positive thoughts for Scott and his family at this critical time. In the interim, as I know Scott was finishing his term on the Planning Commission, may I offer my sincere thanks for his service to the City. It was so clear during the campaign that Scott loves his city. It’s now time for us all to offer it back to him.

  4. Scott has a year left on the Planning Commission, and I expect no less from my friend than a recovery back to health and getting back to those things he loves. In the meantime, please do keep Scott and his family in your thoughts, and hold your own family and friends a little tighter this weekend, as well.

  5. Sorry for my error! We are lucky in that Scott actually has 14 months left on his term as Planning Commissioner. However, the first order of business is for the UCLA med team to get Scott back on his feet, with family, friends and the surf.

  6. All best wishes to my dear friend Scott and his wonderful family. Your persistent optimism raises the level of our discourse; your bright spirit illuminates every room. We wish you a strong and swift recovery.

  7. So sorry to hear this, Scott! I offer a few words from THE PROPHET by Kahlil Gibran: ” Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. . . . The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain. . . . Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy. Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.”
