Re: “Should Pot Measure Pass?”

Mayor Jim Clarke says he “probably” will vote next month for Prop. 64, the legalization of marijuana.

“I have not thought much about,” he said, adding that he is not strongly motivated.

“I need to do more reading on it. Need to look at the ballot arguments, pro and con.”

Speculating, Mr. Clarke, a Democrat, said that “it will be interesting, if it passes, to see how it affects Culver City – on our law enforcement, on our tax base, things like that.”

The mayor, who marked his 68th birthday last month when Culver City turned 99, said he is pondering the question of whether pot “is a gateway drug to other addictions. It gets around to the question of, do you make money off all of these sins, whether it is alcohol, tobacco, drugs?

“We fund a lot of things around here,” Mr. Clarke said. “Probably would produce a fair amount of tax revenue.”

The financial leap is not without pitfalls.

“Would a lot of that (new or so-called extra) money have to go into additional enforcement?” the mayor wondered.

Mr. Clarke is curious about “what sort of technology has been put into place for detecting whether you are driving under the influence of marijuana.”
