First of two parts.
Culver City schools and LAUSD campuses started the new term hours apart in mid-August, but that will sharply change next year – and the year after.
Culver City is not budging.
The mid-August opening of recent years reflects community wishes, says Supt. Josh Arnold. Schedules are individually tailored.
“Calendars are community-wide decisions,” Dr. Arnold said this morning. “They are different from school district to school district, from community to community.”
However, the LAUSD School Board voted yesterday to inch closer in the next two years to the traditional day-after-Labor Day opening. Next August, Los Angeles schools will open one week later than this year’s Aug, 16 launch. In 2018, Los Angeles will open one further week later, which brings the District to one week before Labor Day.
It is LAUSD’s business, their call, says Culver City’s new superintendent.
“I imagine (the LAUSD School Board) took in and factored a lot of data points, and then they did what they needed to do,” Dr. Arnold said.
