Thank God

Robert EbsenOP-ED

I happen to believe in “God” – or whatever other names “The Force” may have. I just happen to call it “God.”

You may or may not believe. But hear me out.

If you say you do not believe in “God,” or some equivalent of “The Force,” you might believe all was created by chance.

If you believe all was created by chance, what do you think of this scenario?

You walk into a store. The floor is wet and slippery. You begin to fall, and then suddenly catch your balance. You say, or feel like saying, “Thank ______ I am okay.”

“Thank my sense of balance.”
“Thank my quick awareness of beginning to fall.”

Am I wrong? Or is it human nature to thank something when we find ourselves “saved” from some potential hazard?

Is it human nature to thank something when we feel “blessed” or just darned happy about something?

How about this scenario?

You walk into a store [I must like walking into stores]. Parts of the floor are wet and slippery. You see someone headed for an obviously wet section of the floor. You tell the person, “Watch out for that part of the floor — it seems slippery.”

Am I wrong again, or is it human nature to feel very good about possibly saving that person from harm?

Moreover, could you possibly feel like thanking something for “making that person’s day”?

What if someone just asked you, “How are you?”

Am I wrong again, or could you feel like thanking something because when you realized you were fine, you really realized how grateful or happy you were to be fine.
