Patriotic Melodies Cause Us to Stand and Cheer

Dateline Dayton — Since the Fourth of July fell on a Sunday, many of us got a three-day weekend, and some even four.

Pauline and I started celebrating the Fourth by attending a showing of the “Music Man,” the first in the summer film series at the Victoria Theater.

Prior to the start of the movie, there was an organ presentation and sing-a-long. All music for this week’s program was patriotic, and the veterans in the theater were recognized by standing when the theme for their branch of service was played

On Sunday, we started the day with church, where before the service, the organist played the Battle Hymn of the Republic, generating a rousing round of applause upon competition. The same was true after Mass, when the congregation joined in singing of God Bless America.

Are We Slipping Backward?

What would the signers of the Declaration of Independence, who gave much by their participation, think of our government today? Would they be leading a movement for the citizens to regain control of their country?

Personally, I believe we have lost a measure of freedom since these brave individuals signed the Declaration of Independence. Freedom is still being taken from us today, and there are signs that under the present administration our leaders lean towards socialism.

It is time for those of us who believe in our country, who recognize its greatness, who see its potential, to step forward and work for change.

The best tool we have for change is the ballot box. No, we don’t need to march on Washington, hold gatherings, carry signs or stand on the street corner.

What we need to do is make an informed decision when voting in November. If the incumbent is not doing the job, and most aren’t, get rid of him or her without regard to party affiliation.

Although my mother-in-law would never have agreed, all the best candidates are not in one party.

We must show President Obama, that we do not approve of what his administration is trying cram down our throats and that we want the government we were promised by him and entitled to under the Declaration of Independence.
