My Summer Fall

Robert EbsenOP-ED

As you, my readers, know, I write about things I enjoy doing. I really don't enjoy falling, so I wasn't going to write about what happened two days ago.
But then I spoke to my friend, Barry, and he suggested I write about the positive outcomes of that event.  I am.

The path between the coffee table and the TV is quite narrow. The velcro straps on my sandals project out. That combination, I believe, led to my fall.

Barry's wife mentioned what appears to be a truism: That when we're falling, we see ourselves falling, and instantaneously make decisions.  One of the decisions we make is to protect our head. That probably is why I fell on my side.

It was interesting, but when my wife helped me up after the fall, I experienced little pain and discomfort. A couple of hours later, though, it hurt.

Wait a minute – I'm supposed to talk about positive things.  I didn't feel so positive for a day and a half. After that, as the pain subsided and I walked a bit better, the doom and gloom that encircled me broke up.  That's positive.

It's also positive that I went walking today with my 96-year-old mom.  It's positive that I was able to keep in stride with her today.

It's also positive that I didn't break my hip. That, I have been told, is a real “no no” for us elders.

It’s also positive that I just ordered a new pair of Crocs with laced support.

My essays usually contain the word “fun” at least once. Here goes.

I am having fun now, thinking about all the fun things I'm going to be able to do now that I am healing.

Careful walking to you all.
