Why It Is Appropriate for City Council to Vote Impeachment

Letters to the EditorLetters

I was very pleased to note in last week’s edition of the Culver City News that Helen Miller had taken the time to read my letter-to-the-editor (“Message to the City Council: Agendize Impeachment,” which appeared in thefrontpageonline.com on Sept. 17. Ms. Miller’s letter is reprinted below in its entirety.)

I was wondering, though, if we were talking about the same letter.

The Bush Administration, both as part of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and in general, has committed serious violations of our Constitution and of our civil rights and civil liberties that constitute a systematic abuse of power.

These include: Presenting false, incomplete and misleading information to the American people to justify the invasion of Iraq; illegal and warrantless interception of Americans’ telephone calls and e-mail messages; denying the right to habeas corpus; authorizing the use of torture; and repeatedly violating the Geneva Conventions.

These, in themselves, are all impeachable offenses.

There are rules, laws and procedures that must be followed in order to impeach the President of the United States.

This is a serious undertaking, and I believe it should be initiated at the local level. After all, where else can the voices of the American people be heard if not at their local City Councils?

Given the fact that Congress, large corporations and the media have supported many of the Administration’s illegal actions, it seems to me
completely appropriate and necessary that the opinions of informed citizens and voters begin to be heard by having discussions in their local City
Councils.

That is the logical first step before joining together to
approach our senators and Congressional members.

An open discussion would enlighten everyone about our government’s role at home and around the world. Instead of spending $720 million a day for
war, we should openly analyze a way of distributing our taxes in such a way as to provide basic living necessities for all.

Instead of running away from the wrongdoing of some politicians, we can do research and analyze what is really happening and why.

Pinning the tail on the donkey, doesn’t really make it wild or a terrorist. Take your blindfolds off. Give the donkey a pail of water to drink, a bagful of hay
to eat and put his tail where it belongs.
