Are Silbiger’s Questions Born Out of Charitable Concern?City Council Should Be Little Too Busy for Impeachment

Ari L. NoonanLetters

Dear Editor:

It is interesting to see all the calls for our City Council to agendize the impeachment of President Bush and Vice-President Cheney.

The City Council can do nothing to bring about the impeachment.

This is controlled by Congress.

Two years ago, when the Republicans controlled Congress, Democrats were calling for impeachment. They are now in control of Congress, and the calls for impeachment have stopped.

I am not a fan of these political impeachments, and that is what this is.

I didn’t feel that Bill Clinton’s indiscretions rose to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors. So I was not in favor of that impeachment. There were more important matters that could have been addressed by Congress.

But I have some respect for the Republicans in Congress who chose to go forward with the impeachment. These Republicans knew that there might be a political price to pay for taking the action to attempt to impeach the President. But they had the courage of their convictions. They went ahead with the impeachment process. And as a result, many of them were targeted by the Democratic Party in the next election. They lost their seats in Congress.

The Democrats in the current Congress found it useful to appeal to their base two years ago when they were not in a position to bring forward the impeachment. And now that they are in a position, they have now changed their tune. They should remove the (D) from behind their names and replace it with (C) because they are political cowards.

They have no set of core beliefs. They don’t have the courage of their convictions. They are afraid of the political price they may have to pay. Their goal is to keep their seats in Congress so they can continue feeding out of the public trough.

We don’t need our city government wasting its time getting involved in tasks outside of its control.

We need them to work on issues affecting the city. It is hard enough finding out the positions of City Council candidates on development, utility fees, and open community communications.

We don’t need to attempt to learn their positions on Social Security, immigration and global warming.

I suggest that the people who would like to see the impeachment process begin, stop interfering with the City Council and stop preventing the Council from doing the city work the members were elected to do. These people should focus their attention on Congress.

They should go to the offices of U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman or U.S. Rep. Diane Watson and interfere with their staffs in the performance of their duties. They are in a position to do something about impeachment.
