Invisible Covering

Robert EbsenOP-ED

This new cover is a clear liquid. This cover is one molecule thick. This cover form-fits perfectly. This cover has been on my swimming pool for a week.

Studies have shown that this liquid pool cover cuts evaporation loss – which is the greatest factor in heat loss from the water – by 85 percent, and it cuts heat loss by 70 percent. When compared to the use of a fabric pool cover, the liquid pool cover provides almost the same protection against heat loss.

My above ground pool used to lose about five degrees of heat each evening. Every evening of this first week with the liquid pool cover, I have seen about four degrees of heat loss overnight. It’s strange to look out my bedroom window and see my pool uncovered, knowing an invisible cover is doing its work.

With the fabric pool cover, I used to see the water recede, due to evaporation, by one inch per week. Now, having filled my pool just before applying the liquid cover a week ago, I have not seen any diminution of the water level. It seems amazing.

For my 9-by 18-foot pool, all it takes is one ounce of this miracle liquid each week to maintain the cover. That comes to 62 cents per week. It’s worth the cost not to have the hassle of moving a fabric cover on and off the pool. In addition, the “show” provided every time I look out my bedroom window is worth the cost.

What will science think of next? How about a cream one can rub over his or her exposed body that will provide complete insulation from the elements, both hot and cold, while at the same time allowing air circulation? How do you feel about wearing a bathing suit this winter?

I have been getting another perk from thinking about my invisible pool cover. When I close my eyes in bed at night, I find it so peacefully relaxing to dwell upon the new magical cover and the way it is miraculously protecting my pool water. I have found a substitute for counting sheep.

One nice thing about having many passions in life seems to be that each passion, each hobby, is a wonder in itself. Each one helps lull me to sleep.
