Green Screen Fun

Robert EbsenOP-ED

I just bought my first Mac computer. There are so many fun things to do with it.

One of them is to make animated movies using my digital camera.

I became intrigued with animating objects and pictures many years ago when I had an 8mm movie camera that allowed for single frame shots.

Now that 8mm is gone, and digital cameras and fast computers are here, the possibilities for animation are great.

Green screen animation, AKA chroma-key blue or green photography, is fascinating.

Here’s what I just did — for the first time.

I set up a green background. It was 2 sheets of green cardstock taped together.

I set up my digital camera on a tripod.

I took a picture of an object (Gort) against the green background.

I moved Gort a bit, and took another picture.

I did this about 40 more times.

I imported the 40 pictures into iMovie on my iMac computer.

I assigned each of the 40 photos a time period of .08 seconds.

I exported the 40 clips to make one “Gort” movie clip.

I imported a clip of my grandson playing.

I overlaid the two clips (Gort and grandson) and chose “green screen” from the dropdown menu.

I exported the new movie to YouTube.

I’ll email you the link to my 3-second film if you email me at: robertebsen@hotmail.com
