Finding a New Home for My Brother-in-Law

Dateline Dayton – I am not sure where the week went. Between work, looking at assisted living facilities and attending a couple of our granddaughter’s basketball games, the days have gone quickly.

A week ago Wednesday, we had a meeting with the staff at the rehab center, where Pauline’s brother is undergoing his rehabilitation. In that meeting it was announced that Joe could be dismissed in a week or more. The pressure was on to make a decision where he will move.

Pauline and our son already had looked at the assisted living facilities at Mercy Siena. Nice, but Joe did not regard that as an option because of the care he received before in their rehab unit.

We toured Walnut Creek. Also nice but pricey. We decided to get an appointment at another facility, close to our home. Respectable conditions, competitive rates. However, there is a waiting list  with current residents getting priority.

Effectively, you would be required to take what I would call a sub-standard room in hopes that one of the nicer ones would become available during your lifetime. The attractive program they offer at this facility is, once you demonstrated that you have enough assets to pay for three years, you would be taken care of for the rest of your life, although, possibly not in the style to which you were accustomed.

After talking things over with Joe, we decided to get another appointment with the Admission Director at Walnut Creek. We talked about many subjects, and finally got around to the cost. She was willing to make a concession in the price, by accepting him at a lower level than previously discussed, due to the progress he is making in rehab. By doing so, this made their cost competitive.  He committed to a room
Now we are trying to get all the things together that he will require. This process is complicated by the fact that I will be leaving for my annual trip to Las Vegas next Wednesday. Also, this Saturday we will need to spend most of the day in Sidney, as my aunt died and her funeral is there. Speaking of funerals, we also attended one on Tuesday, in Piqua, for the sister on one of my high school classmates,

Another Sad Outcome

By the way, our granddaughter Julia’s team lost both games, although she did well scoring. Turnovers did her team in.

P.S. It’s back to the storage unit to start finding the items Joe will require – now where did we put that box?
