Collar Stays

Robert EbsenOP-ED

Today, 30 tiny, powerful magnets and 24 steel collar stays, in four different lengths, will arrive via Amazon Prime.

I was mesmerized last week when my visiting son demonstrated how collar stays work.  I suddenly had visions of all my wrinkled, misaligned, and otherwise strange looking, collars standing to attention, as they magically appeared perfect.

I can't wait to see what the collars look like once the small magnets hold the collars in any positions I choose.  I envision myself wearing shirts that I have shunned for years — all because the collars appear shlumpy.

It will be a project just to decide which of my shirts to choose.  Several shirts do not have slips into which to insert the collar stays. I will have to operate on those shirts to get the collar stays to stay.

Postman Rang Only Once

The package arrived 30 minutes ago.  It was fun! I did six shirts, and used 12 of my 24 metal collar stays.  The dress shirts had openings in the undersides of the collars into which I placed the metal stays.  The sport shirts did not have openings, so I decided to use the stickiest tape in town: carpet tape.  I cut it thin, and it held the stays on the collars like magic.  Next, I separated two tiny magnets from the group by sliding them off the stuck-together magnets, onto my desk.  Looking into my closet’s mirror and placing the magnets inside my shirts to hold the collars in position, was cool.  In most cases there was a definite snap as the tiny magnets made contact with the metal stays. On four of my magnet-placing attempts there was silence, and then the sounds of the magnets hitting the floor and scooting to the metal bottom railing of my closet: ding.

Now that the collars on my favorite shirts look sharp, the shirts, themselves, look relatively unkempt.  I look forward to taking them to the cleaners for pressing.  Won’t those shirts look sharp, once the collar stays are in place!  Hey, my fifteen-dollar investment in collar stays and magnets might just turn me into a million-dollar-looker!
