A Pillow Thing

Robert EbsenOP-ED

I have to admit it.  I have a pillow thing.

How many pillows do you have lying around your house?

I have…count 'em…20.

Well, after you count the six flat ones that I will be giving to Goodwill one day soon, that makes only 14.

I think this pillow thing began 10 years ago when I sent away for a very special pillow on www.Overstock.com. As I recall, it had a firmer inside and a feathered outside. It must have cost all of $30. That became my favorite pillow for six years. Once the pillow had some of the wind knocked out of it, I was buying pillows here and there, going back-and-forth among all the pillows in the house, searching for that perfect night's sleep.

When I found myself wandering about Macy's pillow department yesterday, and when I heard about their fantastic two-for-one pillow sale, I perked up.  And I ante’d up a cool $200 for two special pillows. Half down and half feathers, I chose the “firm” variety, which stated on the pillowcase that it was for side sleepers like me.  I was delighted to hear that I had five months to try the pillows and return them if I was not satisfied.

One night of not being able to sleep with those firm pillows, convinced me to make the trek to Macy's at 10 o'clock this morning to exchange them for the medium variety.

At 3 o’clock I came home, rather sleep deprived. Fluffing up the new pillows, I crashed on my bed.

Heaven!

But wait.  Maybe they are too soft.

Oh, my goodness.

Here we go again.
