Suja Baby Suggests a 64-Day Remedy for What Ails You Not Her

The Global What?

“A Season of Nonviolence,” scheduled nationally for Jan. 30 to April 4, was dreamed up by Santa Barbara-based “The Association for Global New Thought,” not to be confused with its interplanetary rival, “The Association for Global Old Thought.” That Suja Baby and her pals would fall for this hot air balloon from Saskatoon tips you off to their limited level of astuteness. If we just talked to each other, war would waft away, and we could sit here all day, blowing pretty prink, pristine bubbles at each other. One gimmick for the 64-day “A Season of Nonviolence” is a commitment to uttering 64 sunny principles, one for each day of the campaign. I have three favorites. No. 3: “Today I will practice nonviolence and respect for Mother Earth by Making Good Use of Her Resources.” No.5: “Today I will plant seeds — plants or constructive ideas.” No. 6: “Today I will hold a vision of plenty for all the world’s hungry and be open to guidance as to how I can help alleviate some of that hunger.” Darn. If only one of the New Thought thinkers had whispered those principles into President Bush’s left (naturally) ear four years ago, he would not have started the Iraqi War.

Let’s Not be Specific

Feel-gooders fear judgmentalism and specificity. Credit for thinking up “A Season of Nonviolence” is not attributed to anyone, which stems from the New Thought people’s amorphous view of the world: We are all alike, baby. We are all one, baby. We are all egalitarians, baby. We all should earn the same living, baby. We all have the same degree of healthiness, baby. And we should all live the same number of years, baby.

If It Were Limited to Sound

The New Thought crowd always can count on an under-employed public servant such as Suja Baby to bring them the kind of publicity even Donald Trump could not afford. Virtually without exception, gimmicks dreamed up by New Thought thinkers and paraded before the inattentive public by Suja Baby-types sound good. As this one does. But their gimmicks are cursed with two fatal flaws. They merely address symptoms, which is like giving a person a handkerchief to cure his cold. Upon close inspection, their ideas shatter because they are insubstantive. According to this morning’s Long Beach Press-Telegram, Suja Baby said:

“(A Season of Violence) is very symbolic, like Black History Month or Domestic Violence Month. It’s significant for the city to take a leadership role.” (Comment: At least she admits those two hollow promotions are as empty and meaningless as Groundhog Day.)

Reality? What is That?

Suja Baby appears to be intellectually bedridden with an incurable disease that plagues many do-gooder liberals, denial of reality. Long Beach, a magnificent city with much to boast about, is wracked with racially based gang wars. Occasionally, the racism spills into the mainstream. Last Halloween, Long Beach’s reputation sustained another kick to the gut. In the classy Bixby Knolls neighborhood, police say, a dozen black boys and girls — one charged was as young as 12 — ganged up on three young white women, all 20ish. The teens pummeled them, presumably because they were white. The ugly case, covered fairly and strongly by the Press-Telegram, is now being adjudicated. Suja Baby told the Press-Telegram her plan for a “Season of Nonviolence” is unrelated to the gang attack, which seems to expose how unrelated the Councilperson is to reality. Why can’t she admit that it is connected to the crime? Why, then, has shad saddled up her nonviolence horse? Why not confine her program to, say, a meeting of the ladies of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union”?

Postscript

Suja Baby cannot bring herself to confess in public that there is a genuine racial divide in Long Beach that needs to be addressed. Reality gives her a headache. She wants to talk about other differences. Far out, man, far out. Aesthetically, blowing bubbles makes Suja Baby feel better. That way you don’t have to be specific. Far out, man. Suja Baby, you see, has an agenda. Suja Baby and her fellow lady liberals envision 64 days of “programs” on diversity — to heck with the real problem — so that all of us can lean back on our left (naturally) elbows and blow smoke rings, not to mention esoteric smoke, so we will feel better. She did not say whether killers or racists would be invited. In truth, there was a lot she did not say.
