The Culver City High School girls’ basketball team started their season with a 38-25 win over Crossroads of Santa Monica in the Culver City Tournament.

The 12-team tournament continues through Saturday.  The Lady Centaurs’ next game will be Friday night at 7 in the Del Goodyear Gym. If the Centaurs have a good week, they will play for the championship on Saturday.

“We had the first-game jitters but we played a pretty good game,” said Coach Julian Anderson after the win on Monday. “We need to do a few things to get better.  If we can play as a tight knit group, we should be alright.”

The defending CIF champion Lady Centaurs will try to replace CIF Player of the Year Michelle Curry and all-CIF player Kelsey Ueda.

This year we don’t have that great player who stands out,” Anderson said. “We need to become a brick wall.”

The new Lady Centaurs will rely on Kailey Tooke, Lindsey Tanita, Megan Yoon, Katie Lin, Gwendolyn Machado, Kate Suyetsugu, Alexis Aquino and Alexis Arancibia.

“Kate is really helping us at the guard spot and on defense,” said Anderson.

Culver City wants to have a solid preseason and get ready to defend their Ocean League title that they have won for three consecutive years.
