Culver City High School’s girls’ basketball team will be on the road this week for 6 o’clock games on Wednesday at Inglewood on Friday at Hawthorne on Friday.
The 13-5 Centaurs are ready to defend their Ocean League title after beating Morningside and Santa Monica last week to start league play 2-0. Centaurs Coach Julian Anderson was not totally satisfied with the 58-29 win over Santa Monica.
“We are not consistent right now, but we are a lot deeper than I thought we were,” he said.
Culver City relies on senior captain Kelsey Ueda, sophomore Kailey Tooke and senior transfer Michelle Curry. “We will ride them as far as they will take us,” said Anderson.
Hopefully that will beat least as far as they went last year. They made it all the way to the CIF Regional Playoffs.
“We have a mix of girls who can get the job done,” said Ueda. “We have a pretty good team this year, but we have to be more consistent and pick up our defensive intensity.”
Because of their success last season, Culver City has a target on its backs, making the competitive Ueda happy. “I like it,” she said. “I take it as a challenge.”
No. 1 challenge in the Ocean League is Inglewood. The Sentinels beat the Centaurs in November 42-30. Culver City will try to return the favor Wednesday evening.
“What’s good about this team is that they all get along,” said Anderson. “We are small, but we fight hard. They hold each other accountable without getting on each other’s nerves.”
Next week, Culver City will host Beverly Hills on Wednesday, Jan. 29, and play at Morningside on Friday. Both are 6 o’clock games.
