Culver City High School’s football team will play host to probably the best team on its schedule tonight at 7, Crenshaw, ranked No. 1 in Southern California
Both teams are unbeaten in the young season.
Although Crenshaw is top-rated, ranked, Culver City appears to be up for the challenge.
The Centaurs’ high-powered offense is averaging 44 points per game behind the passing of Marquel Carter, their 5-foot-11, 200-pound quarterback.
Carter is strong, fast and can throw on the run. This is his second year as the starter, so he is very familiar with the offense.
Carter, who is black, speaks Japanese and is being recruited by Ivy League schools.
“Marquel Carter is a very special young man,” says first-year head coach Jamal Wright.
“Right now we are playing well on offense and defense. We will find out after the Crenshaw game if we are as good as we think we are at 2 and 0.”
When Carter drops back to pass he has several outstanding receivers to choose from.
Two weeks ago against Peninsula, Carter hit nine different receivers. He knows how to spread the ball around. His main targets are Noah Ashley, Devin Sylvester, Cruz Cueva and Josh Brown.
Although Coach Wright has a young staff, he will rely on linebackers coach Cornell Myles for advice on the defensive side of the ball. Myles is now in his 17th season as a football coach at Culver City.
