Once again the Culver City High School baseball team used pitching and defense to edge Mira Costa 2-1 here last Friday in the opening game of the Lions Tournament.
Until their bats wake up, defense and pitching will carry the 8-3 Centaurs.
“This has pretty much been our season,” said head coach Rick Prieto after their victory over Mira Costa. “Our defense really came through and pitching was outstanding,” said Coach Rick Prieto. “This has pretty much been our season.”
Culver City’s pitching staff was led by junior Jay Sterner. “Jay did a fantastic job,” said Prieto. “That’s what we expect of him. He gave us five strong innings.”
Sterner is batting over .400 in the 11 games, which makes him the complete package.
Senior shortstop Darian Sylvester is playing at superstar level. Batting over .300, he also is their defensive leader. Against Mira Costa, Sylvester made several key plays to keep runners from scoring.
“Darian probably made three ESPN plays,” Prieto said after the game.
Sylvester has taken his four-year varsity experience and used it to become a leader on the field and in the dugout. “I have worked have to be in this position,” said Sylvester.
The environment agrees with him. “I like the pressure,” he said.
Sylvester credits his coaches for having them ready to play every game. “We have great practices,” he said. “Our coaches tell us to work hard and good things will happen.
“I need to be the mental leader of the team, to keep everyone focused in the dugout and on the field.”
Last Saturday the Centaurs beat Golden Valley 4-2 and they continued play in the Lions Tournament against San Juan Hills and today against Ramona of Riverside. Their first two Ocean League games will be next week at Beverly Hills on Tuesday, at La Cienega Park, at 3:15, and at Culver City on Thursday at 3:15.
“Our league is going to be tough again this year,” said Prieto. “Santa Monica is big and strong again. Hawthorne is very good, and the rest will be competitive. Any team can beat you.”
