The Culver City High School football team will travel to Bishop Amat on Friday night to face one of the top football programs in California.

The 3 and 1 Centaurs will battle the 4-0-1 Lancers at 7 o’clock.

Bishop Amat is ranked No. 15 in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times. “We know we are facing one of the best programs in the Southland,” said Culver City Coach Jamal Wright. “We are looking forward to the challenge.”

The Centaurs are coming off a 51 to 0 blowout win over West Adams Prep last Friday.

“We realize West Adams was a little down this year so we tried to work on few things that will help us in the future,” said Wright.

The Bishop Amat game will be the last one before league play starts on Friday, Oct. 5, at home, against Hawthorne.

“Right now our defense, offense and special teams are playing well, but we know we will have to play at a higher level to beat Bishop Amat,” said Wright.

On defense, the Centaurs will rely on the play of their outstanding linebackers Winner Watts, Akili Shannal and 220-pound Keishawn Haley.

The defensive line is led by 6-2, 280-pound Deon Young and Delwaun Beard. Young was All-State last year as a junior. Beard leads the team in sacks. Stanley Norman and Sean Floyd are playing well in the defensive backfield for the Centaurs.

The offense is led by quarterback Xan Cuevas, running back Shannal, wide receiver Julius Wilson and a solid offensive line. “Right now Julius is our big play guy on offense,” said Wright. Special teams is in good hands with the play of sophomore kicker/punter Anthony Caiseros. Kickoffs and punt returns duties are handled by Wilson and Shannal.
