The Culver City High School football team completed a successful seven-on- seven passing league summer last Tuesday, edging University, 14-7.

After the home game, summer workouts conclude this week. The Centaurs will take a three-week break, until Monday, Aug. 10.

When the Centaurs return, they will have to rely on a complete team effort to defend their Ocean League championship.  “This is a blue collar team,” said Cornell Myles, former head coach and longtime assistant. “This team is young. We don’t have a lot of superstars. But I see camaraderie.  Every player has bought into the idea of playing together as a team.”

Culver City will have a new offensive line coach, Ralph Oliver. He played with head coach Jahmal Wright in the 1990s, and he hopes to bring back the days when the Centaurs had a dominating running game.

The past 10 years the Centaurs have relied on their passing game to win.  Coach Oliver wants to run the ball more, use up time on the clock to give the defense time to rest and make adjustments during the game.

Coach Wright was pleased with the effort by his players this summer.  “I saw good things,” he said. “As long as we continue to improve every time we step on the football field, we will be fine.”
