Despite today’s raininess, spring is in the air, and that means the baseball and softball seasons are unfolding on school campuses.
At Culver City High School, both teams are looking forward to productive seasons and both teams are led by two of the best coaches in the area.
Rick Prieto coaches the baseball team and John Sargent will be at the helm for the Lady Centaurs softball team.
Combined, they have more than 40 years of experience at Culver High.
The baseball team opens their season on Saturday morning at home against Glendale Hoover. First pitch is 11 o’clock.
The Centaur softball season is two weeks away. It will start on Thursday, March 7, against Beverly Hills at Vets Park, Culver City, at 3:15.
College Basketball
The UCLA men’s basketball team will try to turn the tables on USC on Sunday, 12:30, at the Galen Center.
The last time the Bruins and Trojans met, USC won an upset, handing the Bruins an overtime loss at Pauley Pavilion.
Both teams are battling to stay in the top half of the Pac-12. UCLA, one game out of first place, is 9-4 and 19-7. USC is 7-6 in the Pac-12, 12-14 overall.
Both have four games remaining before the Pac-12 Tournament, Wednesday, March 13, in Las Vegas.
After Sunday, they will host the Arizona schools on Wednesday and Saturday of next week.
Arizona and Arizona State are in the top half of the conference. The Bruins and Trojans need sweeps if they want to stay in contention a high tournament seed.
