These Aren’t Your Father’s Times

“This just shows how much the conditions have changed for labor unions,” a leader of the Employees Assn. told thefrontpageonline.com this morning. “Overall, I would have to say that negotiations with the city were successful. The main reason is our members will be getting a 4 percent pay increase every year.” As for the split decision on partial pay for health insurance, the union leader shrugged. The current climate of soaring health insurance costs, he said, calls for union members to be realistic and to be philosophical. “When you give up something you have had, something you fought for and won, it is not healthy,” he said. “But we need to realize that times have changed. This is the environment we live in. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see what is happening with unions everywhere in this country.” Personally, he said, the time has come to outfit all American workers with a national health care strategy. “I would call the outcome respectable because we won the main point that we were concerned about,” he said. We protected our retirees. That is really important.
