Making a Positive Judgment

“Andrew looks good,” his father said this morning. “His spirits are good. Everything is good. He has not had any problems sleeping. He is adjusting just fine to being home.”

But there have been profound changes in the 20-year-old soldier, externally and internally.

Just as Before

“Everything seems normal, seems like it was before Andrew went into the Army, but it isn’t,” Lt. Smith said. “We thought this would be the case when he went into the Army (last year). But the change did not come right away. Now you can see he is more mature, more responsible than he was before.”

For protective and for more mundane reasons, his injured left hand is wrapped. “There is nerve damage in Andrew’s hand, and it will heal,” Lt. Smith said. “But it is going to be a long process.”

A Pain in the Leg

The soldier never is allowed to forget his leg wounds.

“Andrew has pain when he walks,” his father said. “It really starts to bother him when he walks too much. But we are very happy to have him home.”
