[Editor’s Note: Retired police Lt. Greg Smith issued the following statement today regarding the recent sexual harassment investigation of the Police Dept., which Human Resources Director Serena Wright said this afternoon is ongoing.]

With the exception of retired Police Chief Ted Cooke, who had a very active role in the past harassment of women who worked for the Police Dept., I have no knowledge of Chief Don Pedersen, current or former Personnel Directors, City Attorneys, City Council members or Civil Service Commission members taking an active role in the harassment of women at the Police Dept.

I have had a problem with their actions over the years. Under the guise of trying to minimize the liability to the city, they have ignored retaliation, perjury and illegal acts committed against these women and the people who have supported them.

They then looked the other way as these womens’ careers were ruined and the guilty parties were rewarded.

Over time, I have come to the realizations that one act committed by these city administrators has resulted in more damage to these women than the harassment ever did.

I have worked a lot over the years with abused and neglected children, in situations where the culprits often are their own parents.

The people these children look to for protection failed in that responsibility, and society looks on them as the dregs of the earth.

The women of the Culver City Police Dept. have come to these city administrators for protection. And they have been ignored. How should we view them?

The single most harmful act that these misguided administrators have committed is this:

They have done nothing.
