Two years ago at this time, a group of Ladera Heights’ families sought the School Board’s approval for a plan to transfer around 370 students into the School District.

Thundering Opposition

That sparked a wall of protest from Culver City parents. Since a significant number of students were black, the assertion was made that race was a factor in the School Board’s unanimous rejection.

Months later, the Los Angeles County Board of Education, the key decision-maker, turned down the Ladera Heights bid.

Disappointed Ladera families carried their appeal to Sacramento. No verdict has yet been rendered. Dr. Boodnick said this afternoon he is “not confident but I am hopeful” about the outcome.

Not Far Away?

Dr. Boodnick, who has lived in Culver City for 30 years and was a teacher-counselor in the District for 8, said the verdict may be made in the autumn.

He was uncertain whether winning the appeal would effectively finalize the transfer or if other steps would be required. Such actions could include an election and an environmental impact report.

Outcome Unclear

Gaining the moral support of the School Board remains an open issue this afternoon.

When Dr. Boodnick made his presentation, three Board members indicated their support — Stew Bubar, Saundra Davis and Dr. Dana Russell.

Last Chance

But no formal vote was taken, meaning Dr. Boodnick’s request was unfulfilled.

However, late in the meeting, Supt. Dr. Myrna Rivera Cote asked the Board to reconsider its non-decision.
