Who Knows When Our Home Will Be Normal Again?

Dateline Dayton – There just doesn’t seem to be any normalcy in the Hennessey household of late. With working to get the bathroom remolding project completed, the house in order for our fiftieth wedding anniversary and the actual party itself, things have been topsy-turvy.

This past week, our son and his two girls spent from Wednesday to Sunday at our house, while their mother was in Las Vegas. It was a delight having them with us. Friday night. Jon and the girls even fixed supper for us.

On Saturday, I picked up our son Chris, who was returning from his home in Florida, for an interview with Hospice of Dayton on Monday. This is the most he has been home since he started fulltime employment, upon college graduation, almost twenty-five years ago.

Saturday afternoon after lunch at the Big Boy, Chris, Jon, Julia and Madison, helped me clean out the storage area above my building. We had to get Pauline’s help. Many of the stored items were hers. I took to the garage the items that I thought could be sold. Jon and Chris drove the remaining items and the recyclables to Jon’s work for proper disposal. Some had to be kept, and today they are neatly arranged in the storage area. Why you even can get into the area. Pre-purge, that was impossible.

In the evening we went for pizza at Marion’s, and later we played Dominos. I hate to brag, but I won both games.

Sunday morning, Chris and Madison fixed breakfast for us, and it was really delicious. After breakfast, we attended church. The girls had a birthday party in the afternoon and then they were going to their other grandparents, to be picked up later by their mother. Chris wanted to go to somewhere in Greens (shopping center), so he could use his computer to do some research for his interview.

Good News on the Way?

Pauline and I drove out to the Dayton Veterans Center in the afternoon. I have been asked to attend a meeting there regarding the possibility of the VA holding an antiques appraisal event. I wanted to make sure I knew where the building was prior to the meeting. I have driven past the VA many times, but I never had been inside. Beautiful facility and grounds. Chris had his interview on Monday morning. He was told they will decide in two weeks. After lunch he was on his way to the airport for the trip back to Florida. Unfortunately his flight was delayed by mechanical problems. That concerned him about making his connecting flight in Atlanta, especially since he was flying stand-by. Upon his arrival in Atlanta, he found he was No. 13 on the stand-by list. Concern turned to panic. He did not want to miss work on Tuesday. He called and asked me about renting a car. I told him that was foolish. It would cost as much as a flight, and he would be a zombie at work. He agreed, and asked me to check alternative flights. There was one, which he caught. Problem resolved.

Late Tuesday afternoon Chris called to tell us he had received an offer from Hospice of Dayton, and he was going to accept. He said he would tell his boss prior to leaving for the day, but wouldn’t actually turn in his resignation until Wednesday, in order to sleep on it. He called us again that night to say the meeting went well. He knew he was making the right decision.

Now comes The Move the first week of October. Chris will be staying with us until things get settled. Who knows when our home will be “normal” again?
