There are times when I can tell within seconds that I am going to play well with a musician. It is an indescribable combination of tone, technique, confidence and musical sensitivity that gels with my artistic style like love at first sight. I felt this sensation ten years ago when first playing with my friend, violinist Dr. Er-Gene Kahng.
While both at UCLA, we formed a piano trio. After she moved east to attend Yale for graduate school, we stayed in written contact but lost musical touch. Throughout the years, I have followed her graduate career from Yale to Northwestern University in Chicago to her first teaching position at University of Arkansas.
Last spring, she approached me to visit her university as a guest artist. I readily accepted, in part because of the opportunity to promote my solo career, in part because I knew this would allow me the chance to play with her again.
While in Arkansas, my busy concert/clinic schedule only provided us with time for an hour’s rehearsal before she delivered me to the airport. However, that was more than enough time for the musical spark to re-ignite and for me to invite her to Southern California for a series of concerts performing violin and cello duo music.
I am excited to find Er-Gene once again in L.A. We enjoyed a weekend of rehearsal culminating in a private recital in Orange County on Sunday. Wednesday we will continue our adventure with a public performance at L.A. Valley College.
It is a true delight to once again perform with Er-Gene. I feel fortunate to have re-established our collaborative connection.
