When is Art Finished?

I could spend two more hours on the sound production of my film score… or 20.

At this point I am not sure which is better. I keep thinking that the minor level and reverb changes are key to creating my best possible product. Part of me also laments only spending two weeks on my last album production.

At the same time, a growing part of me just wants to be DONE so that I can move on to my next creative project.

And so I ponder this same question that kept me from composing for decades. When is art good enough? Ready for the world? Complete?

As the creator, I know the answer. It is ready when I say so.

That doesn’t help. This time, though, I have a hard deadline as an advantage.

Either way, by August 1st, my score will be digitally released to the world. And on August 7th I will begin performing the 25-minute piece with film accompaniment throughout southern California and into the Midwest.

Then it will be complete.
