We have reached that time in the City Council campaign where people write letters to the newspaper stating for whom they are voting.
I guess I will join in.
First, I am not on any campaign committee and have not given money to any candidate. (I think too much money is spent on these campaigns.)
None of the candidates I will be voting for knew I was writing this.
The first time they see this will be if it gets published. I have seen the candidates in action, read their literature and visited their websites. I have decided that on April 8, I will vote for Andy Weissman, Jeff Cooper and Loni Anderson.
I have decided on these three because of their similarities and their differences.
As to their similarities, they have all been supportive to issues (like over development) that I find important.
Developing a Philosophy
Andy recently cast the only Planning Commission vote against sending the Entrada Project, the 220-foot office building, to the City Council for approval.
Jeff Cooper has written to the city expressing his belief that the Entrada project is too large.
Loni was a member of the South Sepulveda Citizens Advisory Committee. She made the motion that slowed and eventually stopped the Champion project.
Prepared, Reflective, Intelligent
I have seen all three in action on Commissions and committees. They showed themselves to be intelligent and well-spoken. They did their homework, and they knew the issue that was brought before them. They listened to and considered input from the public. They work well with people and know how to get things done.
And they are also different.
I have lived in Culver City for 40 years. I cannot remember a candidate, including some incumbents, who is better prepared to become a Councilman than Andy. Over the years he has been involved in all aspects of the city, both in government and business. He has a record of accomplishments these areas.
On the Youthful Side of the Hill
Jeff and Loni are both young (sorry, Andy) and will bring fresh ideas to the Council. They are not hindered by the belief that something can’t be accomplished.
Jeff has spent a number of years on the Parks Commission, working on improving our parks and recreational programs. He was also a small business owner.
Loni has worked at various careers, both in the public sector and in the private sector, and is currently a small business owner. She has served on a number of different committees. Both have a wide variety of experiences.
It is the similarities that will add a competent and hard working trio to the Council. It is the differences that will create a Council with diverse ideas. For that reason, when I vote on April 8, I will be filling in those little ovals in front of the names of Andy Weissman, Jeff Cooper and Loni Anderson.
