Time can mean so many things to so many people. This is what time means to me today, as I approach the age of 70.

I recall reading that God has granted us 70 or 80 years. That piece of wisdom might now be revised to read 80 or 90 years. Nevertheless, if what we read is true, our days are certainly numbered.

Anyone can say “Where have all these years gone?” But when do we take a stand and say “This is exactly what I’m going to do with the years I expect I have left.”?

Sure, we fill up our calendar with activities. We sometimes plan for weeks and months ahead. But how do we prioritize the future events in our lives?

Do we consider being with the people we love most? Do we consider being with the people we love, and whose time may be shorter here on earth?

Do we consider scheduling in the things we love doing most? Do we consider scheduling in the things we believe we should do? Will There Be Enough Time?

Okay. So we reckon we have a good 20 (you name the number) years left. We have prioritized and scheduled in the events that are most meaningful to us. But will we have the time (spell that “enough time”) to do those things?

The answer is “No.”

No, because of the myriad things that just pop up during the day, week, month, and year. Aunt Martha’s party. That trip to Ohio. The visit from Jack. That cough or cold or headache or night with no sleep.

Well then, what can be done? Is there a way to reconcile the wish to spend our time the way we would like and the reality that this “planned-for” time is limited.

No matter whether you are working and have little spare time, or retired and have more spare time, the answer is simple. Treasure each moment. Treasure those special moments even more. And treasure those very special moments as if they were like life itself – the most precious thing.

Consider life as a big hug. An “abrazo grande.” Hug the people you care for. Feel the warmth and keep it in your mind, and it will seep into your soul – forever.
