Through Wacker, Culver Alliance Plans a Warning with Council

As you know, our group was formed to stop the Bob Champions monopolization of Southwest Sepulveda Boulevard and the overpopulation of our community that would have resulted due what he calls “smart growth” and “mixed use” building principles.

Birth of a Promise

At the City Council meeting three weeks ago, you made it clear that this so-called smart growth project was neither smart nor proper for our community.

Our group was also formed to be pro-active in future city planning. Our petition that has now over 1,400 endorsements asks the city government to begin redevelopment anew in collaboration with residents, businesses and property owners.

At your City Council meeting on July 2, our voices were heard.

An Encouraging Sign

The Council agreed to begin a 6- to 9-month process of re-defining Culver City’s development, building plans and codes with community involvement.

(Councilman) Scott Malsin called it “community based planning.”

(Councilman) Gary Silbiger recommended “community workshops,” and Mayor (Alan) Corlin recommended a moratorium on all projects until the new city plan could be completed.

Comparison to Patton

With a passion, he stated that Culver City had been headed down the wrong path with potential over-development, and that like Gen. Patton in World War II, had the chance to right a potential wrong by making a “hard turn in the right direction just in time to avoid disaster.”

With all of this wisdom in leadership and announcement of community-based planning why is this Council dismissing the recommendation of its own Planning Commission to reject the proposed five-story mixed use project at 9900 Culver Blvd.?

The Culver Alliance for Quality of Life wants to know:

1. As the Mayor asked on July 2, what other projects are in the pipeline.
2. When will community planning begin?
3. Where will the meetings be held?
4. What city agency will hold the meetings?

I will be back next week for your answers if you will not provide them tonight so that the Culver Alliance can participate or begin taking its next appropriate actions.
