When I received Ari’s email last spring, I wasn’t sure what to think.

Why would he, the editor of an online newspaper, want ME to write a column?

I wasn’t sure if he was interested in my theories of innovation in chamber music performance, my knowledge of music in general, or something he had read about me on the internet.

In speaking with him, it became clear that he was interested in my artistic process, however that looks.

I didn’t really know why, other than recognizing that I am a bit out of the ordinary – and that there were no other Op-Ed writers with careers in the arts.

When I decided I would commit to writing this weekly column, I also pledged to be honest about the insecurities and tribulations surrounding my artistic life.

Last week was my 6-month anniversary of writing this column. As strange as it has felt at times to let an unknown audience into my private thoughts, I have held to my intent.

Based on feedback I have received, I realize it is my ability to be completely transparent that allows others to take my words and translate them to their own lives. Being real, not perfect, has allowed me to make new friends and deepen relationships with those who may not otherwise see through my flashy performance persona.

In addition, writing this column has been excellent practice at expressing myself. I have had to accept that some weeks I will sound brilliant, and other times I won’t even want to finish reading my own piece. This, in itself, is representative of the artistic life I live every day.

Looking and feeling great has its place, but it isn’t always my reality. As much as that distresses me at times, I recognize this roller coaster ride also allows me to truly appreciate when I am on the top of the mountain.

Thank you, Ari, for allowing me this opportunity.
