I’m not sure how to best describe how I felt tonight listening to my students band together and play holiday carols. They sounded great! To make it more impressive, this was their first time playing as a group.
It began a few months ago with a simple desire by some of my students and me to give the gift of music to some seniors this holiday season. Since then, I’ve started a new body of cello choir arrangements, my students are practicing more and progressing faster than ever, and I am looking at formally launching some sort of cello ensemble in 2011.
Performing is fun and immensely gratifying. I have always known that. What I am learning is the immense upside to teaching. After diligently working in lessons with each student individually, when they came together tonight, they sounded like they have played together for months! As they were able to perform on their own, I was able to sit back and allow their harmonies to warm my insides. To top it off, knowing that I have united nearly a dozen strangers through their love of the cello warms my heart. This is only the beginning.
Ms. Dewberry, an accomplished cellist, completed her DMA in Chamber Music Performance from UCLA in December 2005. She received her MM in Cello Performance from UCLA in June 2002 and her B.M. in Cello Performance from Western Michigan University in April 1998. She also holds a B.A. in French with a minor in Women's Studies and Philosophy.
