Dateline Dayton — It seems as though it was only a few months ago that I took our granddaughter, Heather, back to school.

Last Friday I made the trip to Eastern Michigan University, in Ypsilanti to take her home after completing her sophomore year.

I arrived at the university at 10, and by 11 we were heading for her home in Niles. We made two stops, to get something to eat and our traditional visit to the discount store, just north of Schoolcraft.

Since Heather needs to pick up a class during the summer, she will be unable to spend any time with us in Dayton. She hopes to get a nursing assistant’s position at the local hospital, and she will be taking a biology class at the community college in Niles.

Heather had another very successful year at college, and she hopes to be on the Dean’s List.

While waiting for her final grades for the last quarter, she is again having doubts whether she will make it. She had the same feelings before when she made the Dean’s List.

The Line of Demarcation

I told her as long as she did her best, that is what’s important. She has been selected to provide orientation for the incoming freshmen this fall, and she is very proud of that accomplishment. This commitment will require her to return to school about a week prior to the start of the next term.

As you might be able to tell, this grandpa is very proud of Heather and her accomplishments. Even with her adverse financial situation, she has charged ahead and excelled in her studies.

Admittedly, Heather has changed her goal, but not her field of interest, medicine. Who knows what the future might hold for her?

After dropping Heather off and unloading the van, I made a quick visit to a couple of antique stores in Niles. I don’t know if I wasn’t in the right frame of mind or there really wasn’t anything that interested me. At the last mall, I did find postcards, spending a grand total of 40 cents. Sure is tough to keep the doors open for that sale.

On Friday evening, I took our daughter’s family out for supper and spent the night at their home, leaving early Saturday morning.

On the way back home, I wanted to check out an auction in Sidney, about 40 miles from Dayton.

I arrived at the auction about 9 a.m., 15 minutes after it started. But the item I was interested in, a clock from a former Piqua dairy, already had sold. My nephew, who works for the auctioneer, was able to purchase a beer bottle from my grandfather’s brewery. There were neat items at this sale, nothing, though, that could keep me there. My sister and brother-in-law were also at the auction, so I did get a report later on the sale up until the time they left, which was just after noon.

On the way home, I stopped at one of those big hardware/lumber stores to find a few items I have been looking for. We don’t, as yet, have one of these stores in our neighborhood. So I took advantage of the opportunity, as it is located right along Interstate 75.

Upon arriving home, Pauline and I went out to eat. Other than going to church and going out for breakfast, we didn’t do anything the balance of the weekend.

I had dental work on Tuesday, which required the extraction of three teeth. I have been experiencing some discomfort, so I took it easy. Besides, it was raining.
