[Editor’s Note: The President of the Teachers Union sent the following update to his members after the latest bargaining developments.]

Friends:

Your Culver City Federation of Teachers bargaining team met again yesterday morning with the School District’s management team.

We prefaced yesterday’s discussions with a request that the District rescind the May 25 furlough day and that the District restore recent cuts, such as the $60,000 cut to athletic transportation, in light of the recent management increases.

As you know, the “Director” of Human Resources has been bumped up to “Assistant Superintendent” of Human Resources and the Security Supervisor has seen his work year extended from 11 months to 12 months, even as security guards are seeing their schedules cut.

Cuts to our schools need to be restored before managers are given increases.

There was some progress at the table. As you know, we are determined to give you some relief from annual healthcare premium increases as well as improving your salary schedule. We are continuing to work on elementary prep time, caseload maximums for special ed classes and specialists, caseload and compensation issues for our nurses, funding for athletic and extra duty stipends, prep time for elementary special ed teachers and the teacher evaluation process.

The teams meet again on May 3.

Don't hesitate to give me a call if you have questions or concerns.

P.S.: Your site reps will be distributing signature forms for the millionaires’ tax. We’re opn a short timeline here. Please sign and get friends and family to sign as well. We’ll need them back in about a week. So don’t delay.

We need to be sure that this initiative qualifies for the November ballot. Thanks!
