I finally can admit that I was spoiled. In the past, I used the Logic recording software to compose. Part of Logic’s beauty is that it comes with a huge selection of pre-recorded rhythm/drum tracks. All I have to do is drag and drop the tracks into my piece, and viola. “I got rhythm.”

To compose my multi-voice loop pieces, I now use Ableton, as this new software (at least to me) allows me to improvise and experiment more easily. My challenge with Ableton has been that it doesn’t have this same pre-packaged set of rhythms. I need to assemble them.

A few weeks ago I finally stopped berating this element of the software. With my husband’s help, I learned how to create first a basic track. A number of work sessions later, I am able to fine-tune individual drum sounds and change the groove of a created rhythm mid-stream.

Describing features is irrelevant. It is the outcome I value. I remember when I used to bake chocolate chip cookies from scratch and when I used to cheat and buy the pre-made cookie dough. The homemade version was always better.

I am practicing patience, knowing that by learning how to create and tune my own tracks, I will bring that much more to the grooves I do integrate into my songs.
