Many years back, I got in the habit of splitting up my resume. When I included all my corporate credentials, school accolades, charitable endeavors, and personal activities (like running marathons and dancing) on one sheet of paper – or in one conversation – it got out of control. Nobody believed I was telling the truth… or that I was a sane individual.

I wear so many hats and change mental gears so frequently, I am amazed that I can still form complete sentences. I am reminded of how I was able to learn French fluently in school without difficulty, but when I tried to learn German and Spanish in a more casual manner, I hopelessly created my own hybrid one could either call Germish or Spaman. I am not sure which sounds worse.

Thankfully, my mental acuity is thriving… perhaps even improving. Today is a wonderful example of how much I am capable of, if only I stay focused. For evidence:

4:15 a.m. – Wake up in Phoenix after three hours of sleep to catch an early flight. (I visited my mom for Mother’s Day.)

6 a.m. – Speedwalking between terminals at the airport. Found a great area in between terminals B and C where the human conveyor belt voices converged. Documented as a voice memo as a concept for a new piece.

8:30 a.m. – Delayed arrival into Orange County’s John Wayne Airport after fascinating in-air conversation about music and psychology with Human Resources West Coast Director for Verizon Wireless. Rush home to freshen up and print final materials for…

10 a.m. – Meeting with staff from O.C. Dept. of Education to discuss possible introduction of online music theory curriculum into O.C. schools. (I am acting here as a community activist and business consultant for the inventor of the curriculum.)

12:30 p.m. – Meditation. (Me time.)

2:30 p.m. – Rest. (Yes, I am human.)

4:30 p.m. – Catch up on emails and eat.

5:30 p.m. – Practice and teach. (I always seem to compose great melodies in the moments before a student is about to arrive. Thank goodness for my iPhone voice memo recorder.)

8:30 p.m. – Planning call for University of Arkansas residency in October. (I am so excited; it looks like, in addition to playing four concerts in three days in Fayetteville, I will be speaking with and playing for two different high schools. I’d better nap while I can.)

10 p.m. – Finally responding to my cell phone alarm reminding me of my commitment to you. I didn’t list going to the bank, getting groceries, doing dishes or petting my cat. As I said in the beginning, it never ends. That’s enough for my day.
