Lin Howe Elementary School, in Downtown Culver City, will launch Bike & Walk to School Week on Saturday, from 10 to 1 o’clock when it hosts a free Fix Your Bike Day for children.

On Wednesday, Lin Howe will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day.

Students will walk from nearby City Hall, down Culver Boulevard and around the corner to Irving Place. They will be joined by a selection of politicians, city and School District staff.

Throughout next week, the school will hold a competition to see which class will have the highest number of students walking, biking or scooting to school!

Fix Your Bike Day, and It Is Free

Bring your bike to school on Saturday to get ready for Walk & Bike to School Week.

We will have volunteers from Lin Howe, Bikerowave, Palms Cycle and Chubby’s Cruisers to help fix flat tires, tighten brakes, and adjust seats.

10 a.m. — (Lin Howe Library) Safety presentation for parents (with kids activities). Ron Durgin from Sustainable Streets will speak.

11:30 — (Lin Howe Library) Safety presentation for kids. Colin Gilbert from the Police Dept. will speak.

12:30 — (Playground) Pictures with police car and police dog Scout. Bring your cameras.

Walk Parade on Wednesday

Walk with Principal Amy Anderson and city officials from City Hall to the Lin Howe campus. We will start walking at 8 sharp. Kids can bring their own signs to the Walk Parade about walking and biking to school. It’s okay to come on a bike. But please walk your bike with the parade.

We will be joined by City Council members, the City Manager John Nachbar, the Police Chief Don Pedersen, the Fire Chief Chris Sellers, Supt. Patty Jaffe, and Director of Human Resources Serena Wright.

Schoolwide Contest

The class in each grade that has the highest number of kids walking, biking and scooting to school will win the coveted Golden Sneaker Award. Help your child to get to school this week by walking, biking, scooting.

The event is being organized by the Safe Routes to School Committee at Lin Howe School, comprised of school and School District staff, parents, neighbors, and city staff. The Safe Routes to School Committee’s goal is to make the streets leading to school safer for walking and biking, and to encourage parents to walk or bike with their children to school.

The Background

Walk to School Day was established in the United States in 1997 by the Partnership for a Walkable America. Canada and Great Britain already had walk to school programs in place. In 2000, these three countries joined together to create International Walk to School Day.

Ιν May 2006, the National Center for Safe Routes to School was established to assist communities in enabling and encouraging children to safely walk and bike to school.

The National Center for Safe Routes to School serves as the national coordinating agency for Walk to School activities in the U.S.

More than 5,000 schools in America participate in International Walk to School Day. Nearly 4 million people participate in 40 countries as part of International Walk to School.

Walk to School Day began as a simple idea – children and parents, school and local officials walking to school together on a designated day. It is an energizing event, reminding everyone of the simple joy of walking to school, the health benefits of regular daily activity, and the need for safe places to walk and bike. Schools focus on health, safety, physical activity and concern for the environment.

Organizations supporting International Walk to School Day in the U.S. include America Walks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Highway Administration, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the National Center for Bicycling and Walking, the National Center for Safe Routes to School, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Safe Kids Worldwide, and the Safe Routes to School National Partnership.
